Marcus Wilson Jernegan, Helen and Jared Jernegan's third child, was born in 1872. Like his older brother Prescott, Marcus attended the Edgartown School, Phillips Academy Andover and then Brown College (Baptist College), now known as Brown University in Providence, R.I. He received a Bachelor's degree in 1896 and a Masters in History in 1898. He was slightly involved in his brother's scandalous project, although innocently, with no real understanding of the scheme to defraud investors.
In 1899 Marcus became the principal of the Edgartown School for two years. After conducting several research trips abroad, he was appointed as Professor of History at the University of Chicago, where he received his doctorate in 1906. Marcus authored a number of books on American History, including The American Colonies: 1492 to 1750.
Imogene Cameron of Michigan became his wife in 1913 and they had two daughters.
