Mystic Seaport
The bottom level of a whaler was usually divided into several sections, used to store supplies and whale oil. The forehold was located forward of the foremast and main hold. On the outbound part of the voyage "shooks" or un-assembled casks were stored here. Also stored in the holds were casks containing fresh water. As whales were caught and processed, those casks, once emptied, would be filled with oil. This photo shows the lower hold area of the whaler Charles W. Morgan at Mystic Seaport.
