A raised, hatchway in the ship's deck leading below. The forecastle companionway led from the deck to the forecastle, or seamen's quarters. The waist-high hatch prevented water from coming in and provided the only ventilation and natural light for the crew. This image shows men standing by the entrance to the companionway.
