A triangular shaped room in the bow of the vessel, below the deck, the forecastle or fo'c'sle was the living quarters for the foremast hands (seamen). It was entered by a hatchway near the foremast, and held a double tier of bunks around all three sides, about eight to a side, totaling 24 bunks. There were no benches, but the crew's sea chests completely surrounded the room, two in front of each lower berth. The men used these as seats.
