Martha's Vineyard Museum Mark Lovewell

A narrow cone-shaped tool for working with rope or canvas. Made of wood or bone, fids were used for spreading strands of rope so they could be spliced (joined together), making knots, loosening or holding knots open and holding holes in canvas open. A marlin or marline spike was similar to a fid but made of metal.
