About this artifact

A "sticking Tommy" is an iron candle holder that was used by sailors to "stick" into wooden posts or flat surfaces below decks to provide them with a little extra light. The horizontal spike could be stuck into a vertical post and the vertical spike could be used to stick into the rim of a barrel or another upright object. Because of their shape, they were sometimes used as impromptu weapons during brawls.

Date:
c. 1900
Dimensions:
Length: 4 1/2" and 3" (second spike)
