About this artifact

For voyages lasting months and even years, vessels carried everything they might need while at sea. This is a receipt from William Browne, "bookseller, stationer, map, chart and printseller" in Bristol, England. It lists several items purchased by Captain Hillman, including reading materials, both prose and poetry. It also lists "Godbold's pamplet", which was an 18th century treatise on the nature and cures of consumption, or Tuberculosis, and "Godbold's Vegetable Balsam of Life" which was sold as a remedy for consumption, asthma and coughs.
